Minnesota West Finds Multiple Successes Among the Hispanic Student Population

The Automotive program at Minnesota West Community & Technical College in Jackson, MN, is seeing remarkable success, not just in maintaining consistent class sizes but also in enhancing its demographic reach, particularly among rural and historically underserved populations. While U.S. Census data shows that Jackson County is approximately 5% Hispanic, an impressive 50% of the student population in Minn West’s automotive program identifies as Hispanic.

This achievement in recruiting a significant number of Hispanic students is largely due to effective word-of-mouth and targeted outreach efforts, especially in the neighboring city of Worthington—a sanctuary city in Minnesota with a 35% Hispanic population. Despite the regional demographic, Minn West’s ability to attract and support Hispanic students is noteworthy.

One compelling success story from Minn West is that of Juan Lopez, a non-traditional student who joined the Automotive program in 2023. Juan, a dislocated worker in his 30s with a wife and three children, was determined to change his life. He diligently worked through his English textbook each evening, seeking help from his instructor, Doug, whenever he encountered difficulties. Doug’s patience and encouragement were key to Juan’s progress.

As Juan completed each project and repaired each vehicle, his confidence grew, which he shared with his family and friends. Balancing his studies with family responsibilities, Juan never lost sight of his goal: to graduate and establish a successful career in the automotive industry. Today, Juan works at PM Repair in Windom and dreams of owning his own automotive shop.

Minnesota West’s story is highlighted because their Automotive program is part of the North Star Project. This initiative involves the TCOE assessing programs in eight key areas, identifying successes and areas for improvement.
